Fresh greens. Cooler days.
A new season to grow.

October gardening in Central Florida is about getting ready for the harvests ahead. If a homegrown salad or a handful of fresh herbs sounds good, this is a wonderful month to make a plan for your patio, containers, or raised beds.

Here’s our October guide for Ellenton and nearby communities, with planting and care information drawn from UF/IFAS Extension.

What to plant in October

UF/IFAS lists broccoli, collards, kale, and lettuce among October’s Central Florida choices. For a small garden, choose a few crops you enjoy eating and leave room for each plant to mature.

Greens & vegetables

Consider lettuce, kale, collards, cabbage, and broccoli transplants. Carrots, radishes, and beets offer options for direct sowing as the cool-season planting window arrives.

Herbs & flowers

Parsley, cilantro, chives, and sage are October herb options. For seasonal color, UF/IFAS suggests dianthus, petunias, and pansies for the fall garden.

Keep mid-October on your calendar

UF/IFAS Extension Hillsborough County uses October 15 as a target for planting cool-season vegetables in Central Florida. Treat that as a planning guide and consider your site and current conditions.

Didn’t start seeds in September? Healthy transplants can help you get started. Sow carrots directly where they will grow. Plant smaller batches of radishes or green beans over time to spread out your harvest. Still harvesting productive warm-season plants? You can keep the next transplants in larger containers until space opens up.

Your October garden checklist

  • Check the sunshine. UF/IFAS recommends at least six hours of direct sun daily for a vegetable garden. Recheck your growing spot as seasonal shadows shift.
  • Start with healthy plants. Inspect transplants for insects and leaf damage before bringing them home.
  • Watch moisture and drainage. Garden vegetables need moisture, but roots should not sit in waterlogged soil. Adjust watering to rainfall, plant size, and growing conditions.
  • Look closely twice a week. Check new growth and both sides of leaves. Identify insects before treating; beneficial insects belong in the garden, too.
  • Keep a simple garden record. Write down varieties and planting dates, and take photos of changes. Your notes make next season easier to plan.
